All of these pictures of tattoos were taken inside of prison and most of them were done by homemade tattoo rigs. If you see a red tattoo the ink was probably made from a melted red checker piece. Plastic gloves are plentiful inside of prison if you are wondering how the tattoo artist got them. Inside of prison a tattoo artist will usually be paid in Canteen/Commissary and other valuable items.
It is very easy to get a tattoo inside of the penitentiary. Sometimes a C.O. will let you if you have a good rapport with them. I knew a cat who walked right up to the regular C.O. in the housing unit and asked him if he could tattoo his homie inside of his cell during dayroom. The C.O. was cool and gave him permission as long as they kept the cell door cracked and didn’t lock it. At night after the C.O.’s leave is the easiest time to get a tattoo. The C.O.’s will still do a count every few hours but you can hear them coming in when the door opens to the housing unit.
